Here is an axiomatic truth: everything is impermanent. We live in a world of high-velocity change. We have a reasonably good intellectual understanding of this; change is so obvious. The real issue is that we - individuals and organisations-are still pretty poor at accepting this truth. Despite change being so obvious, we still don’t like it. Our dislike towards change is usually rooted in a deep desire for stability. But if everything is impermanent, stability is an illusion. This illusion is the reason for many personal, organisational and even social tragedies. The illusion of and desire for stability creates a huge gap between where we should be, on the one hand, and our ability to reach there on the other. I say that because often where we should be is not where we are currently. For example, we should be healthier, but we are currently addicted to our sugary drinks and junk food. We should be more innovative, but we are usually - and exclusively - focusing on quarterly results. We should be a much cooler and stable planet, but we are still dumping ever-more CO2 into the atmosphere. We know we ought to be healthier, more innovative and sustainable, but we are often unable to get there.

The core purpose of The Insight Leadership Institute is to expand the capabilities and freedoms of individuals and organisations so that they lead lives with insight, wisdom and continuous innovation.

I don’t think it will be an overstatement if I say that this gap - between where we ought to be and our ability to get there - is the single most important human development gap of the 21st century. This is why the core purpose of The Insight Leadership Institute is to expand the capabilities and freedoms of individuals and organisations so that they lead lives with insight, wisdom and continuous innovation. Living and thriving with continuous change and renewal require continuous human development, and not just training. While training is an important and necessary part of the development process, it is not sufficient. Training tends to focus one-dimensionally on skills and short-term productivity. However, I feel we need a more multi-dimensional approach to human development. A development approach involves many different approaches and opportunities for learning, focusing on knowledge, skills, behaviours AND a deeper understanding of the mind - in other words, the whole person. To use an analogy, knowledge, skills and behaviour patterns are like applications that can run on an operating system. How effectively the applications run depend on the quality of the operating system. To me, the main point of human development - and leadership development specifically - is to continuously upgrade the operating system itself.
